Dist:0.8km<br/>Little remains now other than motte and earthworks with some stonework dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. An earlier castle was built in the early 12th century but was rebuilt in stone at the end of the same Century. The castle was badly damaged during the English Civil War, probably by cannon and was made undendable. Much of the remaining stone was removed towards the end of the 17th Century to build a nearby manor house.

Dist:0.9km<br/>Looking east to the large castle mound. Not much to see and the trip to the top is difficult because the undergrowth and hawthorn becomes very thick. Hard to believe that this was a very important Norman castle with a colourful history. Robert de Chandos built this castle in 1127 after acquiring land in an exchange with Great Malvern Priory. It was rebuilt in stone at the end of the 12th century, but by 1355 Roger de Chandos died and the castle was surveyed and found to be 'ruinous'. In 1403 Henry IV ordered Sir John de Chandos to refortify the castle against possible raids by Owain Glyndwr. In 1428 the castle passed to Gile de Bruges. By 1436 Roger de la Mere, Sheriff of Herefordshire, held the castle and it later passed to the Nevilles. Elizabeth I granted Snodhill to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester and the estate later passed to the Vaughans, who sold the castle to William Prosser of London in 1665. Prosser later built nearby Snodhill Court using stone from the castle after it had been wrecked by a bombardment by an army under the Earl of Leven. [[2203637]]

Dist:0.9km<br/>The stone keep on top of the motte appears to be ten-sided with walls between three feet and six feet thick. From the top of the steep 100-foot high motte there are commanding views all round - the western view here overlooks Snodhill Hall. [[2203625]]
