Lock allowing access from the Knottingley cut of the Aire & Calder Navigation out onto the River Aire at Ferrybridge, looking west-northwest towards Ferrybridge Power Station. The Knottingley cut opened in 1826 completing a navigable route all the way from Ferrybridge to Goole.

I believe that the pub was used as a staging post for horse-drawn carriages using the Great North Road, when the only means of crossing the River Aire was by ferry. Yes, that is a traffic signal in the foreground; it is used by the coal barges entering and leaving the lock on the far left.

This riverside pub was doing a roaring Sunday lunch trade. The bridge carries the now-superseded A1 across the Aire.
