Dist:0.7km<br/>It seems folly now to line a new dual carriageway with housing like this, but it was quite the usual thing in the 1930s. Admittedly they have rear access for cars, but nobody seems to want to keep their cars there now. Bay windows and mock Tudor were very popular then as well.

Dist:0.7km<br/>The station building was designed by William Burgess for the Great Eastern Railway and was opened in 1903 on the branch line from Woodford to Ilford via Hainault. As part of the 1935 - 1940 New Works Programme of the London Passenger Transport Board the line was to be electrified and the station was to be transferred to form one of the eastern extensions of the Underground's Central Line. In the event the disruption of the Second World War delayed progress and the transfer and electrification was not effected until 1948. With its small domed cupola on top the building is Grade II Listed.

Dist:0.7km<br/>View southward, towards Newbury Park and London: LT Central Line (Hainault Loop), since 31/5/48; until 29/11/47 this was the LNER (ex-GER) Fairlop Loop, Ilford - Woodford. Hence it is a typical Great Eastern station, little changed apart from the UndergrounD signs.

Dist:0.7km<br/>The London Underground Central Line runs right alongside Thames Building Supplies as it leaves Barkingside station and heads west to Newbury Park station. Not a very interesting view I know, but it's a hidden corner of the square and it's not a view you'd get very often - going into a building site just to take a photograph for Geograph is not an easy thing to do without attracting the attention of suspicious onlookers!
