Dist:0.8km<br/>This room contained three Sisson engines. One was a twin cylinder machine of 1957 and the other two were single cylinder machines from 1946 and 1949. This is one of those driving a Roots type booster. The exhauster house contained three single cylinder engines.

Dist:0.8km<br/>Two Sisson inverted vertical single cylinder engines driving exhausters to pull the gas off the coke oven battery. Speed control was by gas pressure. There was a third engine on a steel frame in a rather temporary looking building with plastic sides. The exhausters are by George Waller of Stroud. This site is long gone.

Dist:0.9km<br/>A street corner inside this reasonably large works. I really can't remember what was through the open door but I suspect there were probably one or more working reciprocating steam engines through there. The site contained 7 steam engines driving exhausters, boosters and pumps along with some steam turbine drives. This kit was all hard at it in 1983 but is now a fading memory. Anybody wishing to see more can pm me (private message - not post mortem - just realised the potential confusion).

Dist:0.9km<br/>A by-product of coke making is gas (i.e. coal or town's gas). This was burnt in the boiler house and you can see the excess being flared off.

Dist:0.9km<br/>A very atmospheric late evening shot. This is the delivery side of the battery with the coke car in position. You can see that this is a shot from well inside the works but not in any danger. We arrived at about 1800 and left at about 2230, retiring first to a local "chippie". I haven't been in a coke works for far too many years (Orgreave might have been my last).

Dist:0.9km<br/>This was a late night shot on a tripod and I've tweaked it considerably. This is the coke oven battery from the pushing side. The device in the distance travels along the broad gauge railway and pushes the red hot coke out into the waiting car on the opposite side of the battery (q.v.). This works was demolished c1984-5 and was flat when I visited c1986.
