Dist:0.4km<br/>This was once a huge tree, and seeing it from a distance I thought it may have been an oak. But the bark lacked the characteristic ridges of oak - and in any case there are no really large oaks in these woods. Looking around, I found that the largest trees were exotic conifers of a species I could not identify - and the logs in the picture must be the remains of one of them.

Dist:0.4km<br/>An afternoon view in early March. The tree nearest the camera is a silver birch, but lichens grow abundantly in this wood, obscuring the characteristic bark colour of the birches. Despite the name, these woodlands are apparently privately owned. The right of way which passes through is unfenced.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Many of the smooth-barked trees in these woods are overgrown with lichens and liverworts, often very colourfully - as in the case of the coppiced hazel seen here.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The lichens in this wood make it quite a colourful place, even in early March, before the leaves come out. Here, a greyish lichen has grown in a neat rosette, on bark colonised by a rusty-coloured species. The tree, I believe, is a birch. Both these lichens would seem to be common species - familiar to me from woods in other parts of Surrey. My thanks to ceridwen for her advice on this image!
