This hotel used to be the Excelsior Hotel, but has recently been taken over by Holiday Inns. It is located on A45 adjacent to Birmingham Airport, although passenger access to the airport terminals is now on the far side of the runways

The photo was taken on a gloomy November day. The hamlet of Elmdon is just about visible through the murk beneath the airliner. The plane is a Boeing operated by Turkmenistan Airlines and is possibly bound for Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, one of the former Soviet Union republics that gained independence in 1991 following the dissolution of the USSR. The airline flies into and out of two UK airports, Birmingham (BHX) and London Heathrow (LHR).

In the earlier days of 'package holidays', passengers would regularly walk across tarmac to planes. This photo was taken from a small viewing location (across a wall, no security) on right of main buildings (accessed from Coventry Road, Terminal Road). The main viewing location was further west. The hangar on the right housed private aeroplanes / club planes (approx 30 to 40)

Dist:0.5km<br/>Unusually, this basically access-only section of by-passed highway still has a junction with the A45 Coventry Road. Normally such sections are blocked off at the junction for both safety reasons and to prevent rat-running. The junction is visible in the distance.
