This is where the ancient road from Elland to Wakefield starts to climb Lower Edge. Note the one-way 'gate' to prevent motor vehicles from entering the residential area at high speed!

Dist:0.2km<br/>The classic place for an inn, at the top of a steep hill on a medieval main road. It certainly existed in 1850, when it was shown on the 6” OS map. It looks quiet now at 12:13, but later at around 1pm the customers were arriving.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This was rebuilt in 2004. The clubhouse was possibly for the bowling green that was here in 1908. The post on the left is for the inn-sign for the Royal Oak Inn – however there isn't a sign at present.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The building on the corner was a co-op shop, but has been re-fronted and the only clues are the taking-in door on the first floor of the gable-end and the post box built into the wall. The terrace houses have a plaque inscribed 'C. SUGDEN'S TERRACE A.D.1886'.

Dist:0.2km<br/>No.109 has a nicely carved datestone: No.1 / J Rangley / 1813. The pair of cottages (now one house) beyond look older, having a lower roof and a kneeler at the end of the verge of the gable.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This track was made before the railway was constructed c.1840, and is clearly marked on Myers's map of the parish of Halifax dated 1835. This is the top end of the section within the boundary of the present-day shale quarry, looking over the fence at the corner.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This is an ancient main road, possibly with Roman origins as the sharp bend halfway down is typical of the way that the Romans tackled steep hills and it is thought probable that there was a Roman road linking the Blackstone Edge road to the road from the forts at Slack and Cleckheaton (see Ivan Margary's book 'Roman Roads in Britain'). It was turnpiked in the 18C and became the Brighouse and Elland Trust, although it was originally a road from Leeds to Elland.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This is in a little landscaped plot at the bottom of Church Lane. The shelter was built with pride in 1955, with an carved emblem of three fishes on the back wall. Without a roof its purpose is lost. Someone has brought their own seat cushion.

It was probably used to take stone down to the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Here the track turns away from the shale quarry and becomes a holloway, whilst a path has been trodden on the sharp ridge on the left (north) side.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This is where soil is being stored from the landslip site in Reins Wood. It is being transported a few hundred metres by rail.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This path follows the boundary of the slate quarry (on the left). It is not shown on the map as a right-of-way, but steps have been provided further down. Perhaps thanks are due to the Thornhill Estate, who I believe own the wood.
