Once known as Twickenham Ait, and about 1,800 feet or about 500 metres long, the island was only reachable by boat until 1957, when a footbridge was built. This footbridge, built in 1998, replaced that one.

The odd mixture of building styles of the ragstone tower and red brick nave and chancel in this church is due to the fact that the original church collapsed in 1713, leaving just the tower. Twickenham Rowing Club on Eel Pie Island, seen from across the river during the club regatta in May 1978. On the ground floor was the boathouse, with the bar on the first floor. To the right is the Skiff Club boathouse and behind it the tank, where you could practice without having to actually go on the smelly old Thames. I confess to having spent much more time in the bar than on the river...

This is a picture of the then-new Eel Pie pub in 1982. At the time it offered a welcome alternative to the domination of Watneys and Courage pups in the area, and always offered a good range of well kept ales. The building was previously a pair of shops, as is apparent from the frontage.

This bridge connects the Embankment at Twickenham (left) with Eel Pie Island (right). The picture was taken in the autumn of 1986. In the 1990s it was badly damaged by contractors installing a gas pipe, and it has been noticeably altered since this picture was taken.

This picture is for comparison with my 1986 shot of the disused Twickenham baths. The site has now been redeveloped as a riverside public open space.

These formal gardens are part of the grounds of York House, now municipal offices for Richmond upon Thames. The statues are of nubile water nymphs cavorting with winged horses among rocks, and are entitled 'Cascade, Pool and Oceanides'. (See http://www.twickenham-museum.org.uk/detail.asp?ContentID=11 for more information). As I took the picture, the site was fenced off and careful restoration work was in progress.
