Miniature coffins containing small wooden figures (95mm in length), found in a cave on Arthur's Seat by five boys out rabbiting in 1836. Their purpose is a complete mystery. Contemporaries believed that they were made for witchcraft. Others have tried to link them to the West Port murders, for which Burke and Hare were tried in 1829. The snag is that the numbers do not add up. The serial killers were known to have murdered 16 victims, whereas there were 17 coffins on all. They were, however, found arranged between three tiers of slates, comprising two tiers of eight coffins with a solitary coffin placed above. Could the single figure have been a representation of the executed Burke? [[2517081]]

Historic building in Edinburgh's old town now used as a community learning centre. Continual rebuilding of the old town has resulted in a requirement to build an external staircase to reach the second floor. The building contains the Beam Room which features an elaborate painted ceiling dating from the 16th century.

Victoria Terrace, and Victoria Street below, were built in 1878 to replace the much steeper West Bow. A few buildings at the Grassmarket end managed to escape demolition.
