Path to the beach from the Bush Estate. Only the Bush Estate, a private estate consisting of pre-war bungalows and caravans, remains of what once used to be the village of Eccles. In a petition from as early as 1605 villagers asked for a reduction of taxes, after only 14 houses and 300 acres of land remained, following a ferocious storm the year before. The parish church, St. Mary's, fell into the sea on 25. January 1895 but the church tower remained standing on the beach for a while longer. Because of erosion it had partially slipped beachwards by the time its further progression was halted, in the early 1980s, by the building of the new sea wall, which now encapsulates the structure.
