A pretty ironstone church with an unusually thin tower. Much of St Michael's is 13th-century. For its especially interesting interior, see a number of the other photographs in this gridsquare.

The tower is unusually thin. Like the rest of the church, it is built of rough coursed ironstone - except for the ashlar battlements.

A small ironstone church on the edge of the village. The roof has a very shallow gradient so from this angle the building looks as if the roof is missing!

Looking through the stone screen (see [[674086]]) into the chancel. The three light reticulated window is of the 14th century Decorated period. There is evidence that the roof of the chancel was once thatched.

This painted hatchment hangs above the chancel screen in St Michael and All Angels' Church. It would have been displayed on the death of Rowland Eyre, the Lord of the Manor who died in 1777. Rowland had married the Hon Mary Widdrington in the mid 1700s and both their coats of arms are shown on the hatchment. The wife’s coat of arms has a paler background, this denotes that she was still living at the time of her husband’s death. The motto says: Omnis Dominu Spiritus Laudet

This shows the notable stone screen between the chancel and the nave, which is one of only five surviving in England. The door arch is Early English and the three-light windows belong to the Decorated period and are 14th century. The plastered screen rises to the roof apex almost completely separating the sanctuary from the nave. The effect is dramatic and truly mediaeval..

The piscina and small aumbrey in the south wall. An aumbrey is a recess in a wall which could serve as a cupboard used to store consecrated wafers for the Holy Communion. There is evidence of a door being fixed to this opening. A piscina was originally a basin or cup, often made of stone, used for washing vessels used in the Sacrament. By the 13th century the piscina was recessed into the wall with a pipe or channel connected directly to the ground for the disposal of liquid. You can see the depression of the "drain" quite clearly in this one.
