Just outside the west door of the church of St Mary in Eastling, this venerable tree is said to be around 2000 years old.

As may be seen in this pic http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/240025 there are no steps on the other side of the wall so I wonder if this was built as a mounting block.

The church is set back from the road, next to Divan Court. The stone slab next to the (broken) stile is the top step of a flight of three out of the churchyard - most odd, presumably one was expected to jump down, unless it was originally intended as a mounting block.
