Dist:0.2km<br/>Site of arguably the last battle of The War of the Roses http://www.battlefieldstrust.com/resource-centre/warsoftheroses/battleview.asp?BattleFieldId=42 . On the morning of 16th June 1487, a Lancastrian army of 12,000 men under the command of the Earl of Oxford, routed a rebel Yorkist army of 8,000 men under the command of John de la Pole, Earl of Lincoln. No quarter was shown to the defeated rebels with over 4,000 Irish, German and Swiss mercenaries slaughtered in the rout, including the Earl of Lincoln, Lord Lovell, Sir Thomas Broughton and the Earl of Kildare. The Royal army sustained over 3,000 casualties so the death toll was over 7,000 for the three-hour battle. The Pretender, Lambert Simnel (who claimed to be the Earl of Warwick) was spared and given a job as a spit-turner in the Royal kitchen.
