The photo was taken from just above the stile that the footpath uses to cross the fence above the right bank of How Beck and judging by its minimal trace on the ground, is a lot less used than the bridleway.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Confusingly, "Trees" is the name of the house, which isn't distinguished by a particularly large number or fine specimens in the present day. The photograph was taken from the south bank of How Beck as its valley widens and flattens towards East Briscoe.

Dist:0.7km<br/>The dark conifer plantation contrasts with the yellowing grasses on the autumn moors to the south of Hury reservoir, just visible behind the barn. Enclosed fields with better grazing lie on the south-facing slopes on the far side of Balderdale.

Dist:0.8km<br/>A sike is a slow-flowing stream in a shallow cut in boggy moorland. Bense Sike is a particularly small example as it crosses under the road to Booze Wood. Behind the photographer, the sike meanders for a short way, then starts to descend more steeply, cutting a V-shaped valley for itself. This means it is no longer a sike, but a Beck - Osmond Beck in this case, which flows only a short way further before dropping into the River Balder.

Dist:0.8km<br/>All the farms on Loups's Hill are in ruins and the area is little-visited except by the military as this lies in the danger area for what appears on the map as "rifle range", but sounds (from my home several kilometres away) as though it is often used for machine gun practice. Several of the enclosures seem still to have higher quality grass than the surrounding moor, but many of the trees are falling into decrepitude (several in this area seem to have been ringbarked by some grazing animals). This group of three look healthy but soil has clearly eroded from the roots and they look gaunt against a lowering sky in the late autumn.

Dist:0.8km<br/>A bridleway follows the right bank of How Beck from How Beck Head (not the start of the stream, but the point at which it starts to cut a deep valley, and changes name from Yawd Sike). At this point, a footpath drops down to the stream, crosses it and climbs the left bank to head down the hill to West Briscoe. The stile seems very recent and robust, and rather out of character with the almost imperceptible footpath itself, which doesn't seem to get a lot of use. Perhaps this is because there are simply so many paths to choose from on this bit of the moor.

Dist:0.8km<br/>East Loups, now a ruin lies with an area marked on maps as a 'Danger Area' and notices at the edge of that area tell that it's a 'Military Firing Range'. The photographer, on a good many visits to the area has never come across any such activity.
