Dist:0.7km<br/>Wood ants are large ants who live together in huge colonies. The northern wood ant, Formica lugubris, has a predominantly Scottish distribution but is also found in Cumbria and Northumberland. They can live in either coniferous or deciduous woodland, preferring the edges, along rides or in clearings to benefit from the warmth of the sun. The nests are large, dome-shaped, untidy heaps of pine needles and twigs, up to 1m high. Their main food is other insects, and they also milk honeydew from aphids coillected from the suuouding trees. Wood ants of the genus Formica, produce formic acid in glands at the tip of the abdomen, which they use to spray at prey, or in defence. http://www.arkive.org/hairy-wood-ant/formica-lugubris/
