Dist:0.5km north<br/>Looking west, with the A4180 road at the end of the track. These are mixed deciduous woods which have had oak trees for timber and hornbeams growing under them to keep the oaks straight. The hornbeams are coppiced about every 20 years to supply small timber and poles. The woods are a National Nature Reserve, managed by the London Borough of Hillingdon.

Dist:1.0km south<br/>The nuts are enclosed in a green husk with sharp spines. This tree is by the car park of Mad Bess Wood in Ruislip. Chestnut trees were introduced to England by the Romans and are common, particularly in parkland.

Dist:1.2km southeast<br/>Walking through Ruislip Woods we noticed a leaf hanging from a tree on a six foot long thread - then the spider pulled it up. We noticed more leaves on spiders' webs, and came to this area with many pieces of leaf hanging on the web. I couldn't find a description of this spider activity, more information would be welcome.

Dist:1.2km east<br/>The pond is part of a stream that runs through Copse Wood and from here goes onto Northwood Hills. Taken on a cold day, there is a very thin film of ice on the pond.

Dist:1.4km northeast<br/>Activists from CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale) are currently warning that almost five pubs in London are permanently closed each week. This is the burnt out shell of the former True Lovers Knot PH on Rickmansworth Road. The London Borough of Hillingdon's Tourism website has a photo of the pub in its heyday here http://www.hillingdon.gov.uk/general/travel/photo_library/detail.php?pic=125 Update March 2008: The pub has now been demolished and the land is now a construction site.
