From York Open Planning Forum: "This detached house has square bay windows and extensive decorative tile-hanging. A good and rare example of this craft in Dringhouses." The house was built between 1890 and 1892 as the home for the then Wesleyan Minister of the adjoining chapel, Dringhouses Chapel that had stood on the site adjacent to the house since 1834. The old chapel was demolished and the new chapel, now a Debt Management company office, was built after Bentham Lodge opening its doors to worshippers in 1896. The last services were held at the chapel in 1954. A photograph of the house, chapel and vista down Tadcaster Road from about 1900 hangs inside the porch of the Fox & Roman public house about 100 yards from Bentham Lodge. Bentham Lodge was named by the present own as a tribute to Jeremy Bentham, English jurist, philosopher, and legal and social reformer.
