Dist:0.8km west<br/>Joseph Priestley was born at this site on 13th March 1733. Rev. Dr. Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), minister, political radical who supported the principles of the French Revolution, yet who is better known as a pioneering scientist who made an outstanding contribution to our understanding of the chemistry of gases.He is best known today for his discovery of oxygen - and to a lesser extent his recognition of the process of photosynthesis, his invention of carbonated water and his discovery of the anaesthetic nitrous oxide (laughing gas).

The 16th century manor house is one of the UKs most haunted houses with the ghost of William Batt sending cold shivers down your spine. Also the house featured in Brontes "Shirley". Its well worth a visit.

Dist:1.1km southeast<br/>This must be a nuisance to residents on the south side of the closure, who have to follow a long diversion to reach the recycling centre. The bollard is in the middle of a bridge on the former Heaton Lodge (near Huddersfield) to Wortley (near Leeds) railway. This was built in the early 20C, on a tortuous route via the Spen Valley, to relieve congestion on the main line through Dewsbury. The cutting on each side has been filled in.
