Dist:0.2km north<br/>This monument at the north-east corner of St Paul's churchyard is probably the grandest of those left standing when the churchyard became a public space in 1913 (see [922131]] ). The inscription has faded so much that it is no longer possible to make out the name of the person(s) commemorated.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>The (disused) drinking fountain in the grounds of St Paul's church was one of many installed in public places around London in the early years of the 20th century. The inscription around the edge reads: "Erected by the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association of 83 Lancester Gate. The Association laid out this ground as a public garden 1913 and placed this fountain there 1914. In memory of Hugh Taylor 1817-1900 from his daughter."

Dist:0.2km north<br/>Church of St. Paul, Deptford. built 1712-1730, the work of Thomas Archer. Pevsner describes it as "large, sombre and virile". Certainly a very fine building which looks best when the sun illuminates the white Portland stone. Picture taken in 1959 and scanned from old Agfacolor slide.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>These gruesome skulls adorn the gates of the church of St Nicholas, Deptford. Local legend has it that this is the origin of the pirates' motif. More skulls (carved in wood) can be found within the church and there is an old 'charnel house' in the churchyard where skeletons were stored - it is sadly now used as a tool shed.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>Archer's highly symmetrical classical design of St Paul's included these impressive flights of steps at the north and south sides. They are no longer used as church entrances and had become half-buried over the years as burials pushed up the level of the surrounding land. As part of the restoration c.2004 the ground was excavated around them to restore the steps to full view, and the resulting 'pit' is now used as a performance venue.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>This church it is a short walk down to ship building yards and the Thames. The sailors would come here to pray before embarking on a new voyage. Some of their voyages were to plunder from any ship they find on the high seas. Since they could not fly the flag on their nationality they chose to fly the Scull and Crossbones flag of St. Nicholas, that way other Deptford ships would not attack them.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>The organ was new in 2004 as part of the restoration of the church. It was built by William Drake, retaining the existing casework and facade pipes by Griffin (c.1745).

Dist:0.3km north<br/>Thomas Archer brought Roman Baroque to the design. St. Paul's was consecrated in 1730. Today there are regular lively religious meetings in the crypt.

Dist:0.3km north<br/>The black-and-white tiling on the chancel, the wide curved steps and the "trompe l'oeil" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trompe_l'oeil decoration behind the altar, make this one of the most impressive church interiors anywhere.
