The River Darent is split into two watercourses through Central Park. The Darent Valley Path follows the western one.

Dist:0.2km<br/>These two tunnels were constructed in 1923 to allow the River Darent to pass under the new Dartford By-pass (now Princes Road) which passes over on the embankment above. The arches are 148 feet long and there are two arches as the River Darent consisted of two streams at this point. The tunnel on the right was converted to become a pedestrian walkway and opened in 2009. It takes the Darent Valley Path under Princes Road rather than up the embankment and across the road. The pedestrian tunnel is designed to flood during times of high river flows. The other unusual feature of the tunnel is that as you walk through classical music is playing.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Central Park in Dartford dates back to 1903 when five acres of meadows were given to the town as an area of recreation. In June 1905 the Central Recreation Ground was ceremonially opened to the public with a procession from the Council's offices and the Dartford Volunteer Silver Band playing on the bandstand. In 1923 one of the stone arches from the medieval town bridge was rebuilt across a small stream. This was the River Cran which was Dartford's other river (apart from the River Darent). The Cran now flows underground.

At that time they were known as Ellingham's Ponds after the company which excavated them, and they were later called Brooklands Ponds after a nearby house. During the Second World War the lakes were covered by netting on floating wooden frames to stop German aircraft using them as a navigation aid to find the nearby Vickers Munitions Works. Princes Road lies behind the trees on the right. This was the original Dartford By-pass, opened on 19th November 1924 by the Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII.
