Welcome to Dalston. This is a guide to the Dalston area.

For four years 1964-68 the writers Barry Took and Marty Feldman produced some of the greatest Radio Comedy ever in the form of Round The Horne. One of the segments of the show was often “Radio Balls Pond Road” where the double entendres flowed freely. In fact most people's Honi Soit had never been so Mal Y Pensed! Its fame was “crowed from John O’Groats near the town of Wick to the horse meat shop in the Balls Pond Road”, of which there is no sign today. The Over Eighties Nudist Leapfrog Team are also absent from this shot of the Balls Pond Road looking eastward near the A10. However you get two Routemasters as a bonus, feast your eyes on them while you can; they will soon be gone forever.

This building is probably going to be demolished as the area is being redeveloped. Protesters have erected various notices and banners, and on the roof have painted in large white letters : HACKNEY NOT FOR SALE, WE ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE. I couldn't get to the right position to get a decent shot but nonetheless wished to show the side of the building and the graffiti on the roof -- which must have been written at some considerable risk to the perpetrators!

From the outside, the house that stands at 121 Mortimer Road in Hackney, east London, looks no different from the thousands of other decrepit old buildings scattered across the country. The roof has caved in. Three of the windows are boarded up and cracked paint peels from the wrinkled walls. But this is no ordinary house. Since the early 1960s, the man who owns and lives inside the £1m Victorian property has been digging. No one knows how far the network of burrows underneath 75-year-old William Lyttle's house stretch. But according to the council, which used ultrasound scanners to ascertain the extent of the problem, almost half a century of nibbling dirt with a shovel and homemade pulley has hollowed out a web of tunnels and caverns, some 8m (26ft) deep, spreading up to 20m in every direction from his house.

The poster has been "adapted" by persons unknown, and they have added many "comments" that make clear their opposition to local development plans. Whether you agree with their sentiments and methods or not, it is clear that this area will change enormously with the extension of the new East London Line and the associated redevelopment.
