<br/>East Croydon is a major rail hub in south London, connected by high-speed services to London Bridge, Clapham Junction and Victoria. In 1992, British Rail replaced the Victorian brick-built station, spanning the lines, with this cantilevered steel-and-glass construction. The design avoided the need to replace the bridge carrying the road over the railway. Further measures to keep down costs included use of the old platforms, ramps and even the iron columns holding up the awnings - although these were disguised with cladding. Just to the right of the station is the former postal sorting office. On the extreme right of the picture is the NLA Tower - known locally as the "threepenny bit building".

<br/>This is at the junction of George Street and Wellesley Road. Through north-south traffic in Wellesley Road passes this point via an underpass. There are tramlines in George Street and along the stretch of Wellesley Road to the north of this junction.

<br/>Grant's was formerly Croydon's leading department store. It was recently rebuilt, retaining just the facade (much of which collapsed and had to be painstakingly reassembled) as a multi-screen cinema and entertainments complex, the top of which can be seen looming into the sky above the Victorian brickwork.

Dist:0.1km north<br/>See [[813854]]. Receding from the camera, the car runs down the narrow George Street West, where it will pass the Whitgift Almshouses and then descend Crown Hill again. Altogether three circuits were made, and all went well. The Police seemed relieved that this new monster had not run amuck and taken the lives of innocent citizens.

Dist:0.1km north<br/>Croydon Town Hall is sometimes said to be the only decent building in the town: it certainly is very easy on the eye. Betjeman would have loved it. The Routemaster bus about to turn out of Katharine Street onto Park Lane is, of course, of a type no longer to be seen in the town.

Dist:0.1km north<br/>When it was proposed to re-introduce trams to Croydon (which had not run since 1950), there was opposition, mainly from those who always travelled by motorcar and feared the trams would get in the way. A society was formed, called 'TRAMSTOP!' and Mr Les Hartridge was one of the prime movers. When work actually started, Mr Hartridge was not to be deterred, but took up his position on top of the underpass with his banner of protest. I do not know if Mr Hartridge is still alive: I admire his courage, if not his opinions!
