Dist:0.3km north<br/>These mills are next to the river Aire near the centre of Leeds. Taken looking SE from South Accommodation Road as it passes over the river. Considering the rate of development in Leeds I thought it best to photo them before they became yet more student housing and still had character. Photograph was taken from Richmond bridge.

Dist:0.3km north<br/>There is a more recent image showing this site closed up and awaiting redevelopment [[594632]] When I photographed it the building was in much better shape than the adjoining Hunslet Mills (flax).

Dist:0.4km north<br/>Built in 1838-40 for steam-powered flax spinning, with extensive additions from 1840-50 when a new warehouse and boiler house were added. Most of the additions were demolished but the main mill was saved by listing (Grade II*). Proposals have been made for development as part of a regeneration scheme for the area into a landscaped business park. Looking on from Fox Way.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>This part of Leeds is changing very rapidly. It was a derelict wasteland when I took this. A quote from "Bright Future - The Re-use of Industrial Buildings" by Binney et al (1990) seems in order - "Hunslet Mill is the only remaining building of architectural merit in an abandoned urban wilderness where recent development has contributed nothing to the quality of the environment". Built 1838-40 for steam powered flax spinning and reliably attributed to William Fairbairn and is a good example of early fireproof construction.
