Dist:0.5km<br/>Troon is a large village just south of Camborne. With the development of several mines around the village in the 19th century, Troon grew rapidly from a tiny hamlet into a village almost large enough to call a town.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Looking to the northeast out over the square. Most of the rest of the land in the square disappears into the valley. The land in the distance is the lowlands around Hayle and across St Ives bay to St Ives itself in the haze.

Although it is a bit hazy today so you may have to take my word that the lighter colouration on the slope in the distant mid-right of the photo is the buildings of St Ives.

Dist:1.0km<br/>Even by Cornish standards this lane is narrow and has very few passing places. An averaged sized person could easily lay across it with their feet touching one bank and their hands on the other.

Dist:1.0km north<br/>Set off to the northeast of the Grenville United Mine, on Newton Moor, lies the remains of Goold's Engine House

Dist:1.0km north<br/>These mine engine houses are undergoing preservation work. I was unable to find out for sure which mine they used to belong to, although I think it may have been South Condurrow.

Dist:1.1km north<br/>The primary use for the engine which was housed in here was to drive the stamps which crushed the ore in preparation for further processing. The stonework in front of the engine carried the flywheel which converted the up and down motion of the beam engine into a rotary motion. The engine house was built around 1891 and there were 136 stamps operating from it, the combined noise of all that rock pounding must have been rather distinctive to say the least.

Dist:1.1km southeast<br/>This is an area of high land on the Carnmenellis Plateau. It can be very windy up here.

Dist:1.1km north<br/>Tin ore was roasted at a low heat to drive off sulphur and arsenic which would have ruined the smelting process. The fumes went through a long tunnel where arsenic was deposited on the walls and the remaining fumes went out through this chimney. In the mid distance can be seen the King Edward Mine, now a museum, and on the horizon is the Woolf's Engine House [[176746]].
