Dist:0.6km<br/>Neil Howlett tells me this is an old cattle droving road. It is also a beautiful, though short, example of what I call a "green Road" (just my personal name - it doesn't seem to have any official status). In my personal definition of "green road" absence of wheel ruts is important. In Ireland they have the rather nice word "boreen" which means "little street" but most Irish boreens are what we would call sunken lanes or muddy tracks.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Having crossed Egford Brook a few yards previously. The name suggests there was once a ford here. Frome is a little more than one mile behind, ahead lie Whatley, Whatley Quarry and the Mendips.

Dist:0.8km<br/>About half way between Frome and Nunney looking toward Frome. The road was very quiet that day probably due to flooding after overnight rain and melt water from snow on the fields.

Dist:0.8km<br/>Last night's rain still lies on the ploughed field together with melt water from earlier snow, some of which remains on the distant hills. A sad sight perhaps but spring is coming and it will soon look more cheerful.

Dist:0.8km<br/>Looking north. The brook is on the other side of the trees to the right, it joins the Mells River near Vallis Farm about half a mile ahead, eventually joining the River Frome.

Dist:0.9km<br/>The ploughed field looks desolate but fear not. The recent frosts and snow have broken down the soil to a fine tilth, worms and bacteria are waiting for warmer days, which are not far off, to start their work. Marston Gate, on the outskirts of Frome is on the far hill.

Dist:1.0km<br/>On the way to Frome. If you are looking for an interesting route between Wells and Frome look no further. Not fast, but interesting. You will need to look out for quarry lorries most of the way, they are driven with care and consideration for the most part but still look out for them.
