Prefabs were built on Skeavington's Lane which marks the western boundary of the site before being demolished to enable the area to have rows of town houses and bungalows built in the latter half of the last century. These are now the subject of a major redevelopment programme with properties in the middle of rows being demolished to create semi-detached dwellings.

Dist:0.6km<br/>The main road between Ilkeston and Heanor almost diagonally bisects the square and from the mid point, the aptly named Long Lane runs down to the former Shipley Gate Railway Station. Seen here looking to the east from the lane is Cotmanhay Wood. Bentley's Plantation, another wooded area is across the farmland to the west.

Dist:0.6km<br/>The Erewash canal was opened in 1779 to serve the collieries along the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire border and the last commercial narrow boat used the canal in 1952. It is still in use today for leisure activities. http://www.erewashcanal.org.uk/

Dist:0.6km<br/>This is the Bridge Inn at Cotmanhay, taking its name from the bridge over the Erewash Canal. A feature of the bridge is the newer brickwork in the upper parts of the abutments. This became necessary to maintain headroom under the bridge as the level of the land sank due to mining subsidence in the area.
