To the right was the site of Gaunless Lead Mill c.1770-1870. Owned by the Earl of Darlington. The tall sandstone chimney was built in 1832 to carry sulphurous gases away from the furnace, by creating a draught which sucked the fumes up a flue to the chimney on higher ground.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The mill operated from 1790 to 1890 and was supplied with coal from local collieries. Lead ore was brought for smelting from the lead ore fields of Teesdale. The only remaining building is the manager's house, seen here on the left.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The cottage stands beside the bridge carrying the B6282 over the River Gaunless, on its north bank. The area was the location of a lead smelt mill and the Copley Chimney which carried waste gases from the process stands on the rise beyond the trees and out of view.
