<br/>These derelict works buildings are at the eastern edge of Erith, at the junction of Manor Way and Slade Green Road, and are typical of several in the area where weeds, brambles and buddleia have now taken hold. The building on the right caught my eye by virtue of the large number of concrete buttresses that support both sides of the structure along its full length. Is this because the building was about to collapse or was it part of the original design that some function undertaken inside the unit could have lead to a potentially calamitous event?

Dist:0.6km north<br/>From a couple of internet sources, I assume that this very large church was completed in 1911, the foundation stone having been laid in 1899. It would have been built to serve the rapid expansion of this area south-east of Erith at the time. The War Memorial is on the right. The Church is on Slade Green Road which was originally the main road into Slade Green from Erith, crossing the railway line between Erith and Slade Green by way of a level crossing. The crossing, which would have been off to the left in this photograph, has been lifted, and the road is now a dead end leading only to the church and a couple of industrial estates.

Dist:0.8km northwest<br/>The pier at Erith is used, like seaside piers, as a promenade although presumably industrial in origin. It is 'L' shaped and the section shown here runs parallel to the shore at roughly the low tide level.

Dist:0.9km south<br/>The walls of Howbury Moat date back to the 12th century, although a manor house occupied the site well over a thousand years ago. Several rebuilds occurred over the years, and notable occupants include Odo, Bishop of Bayeux and the distinguished admiral, Sir Cloudesley Shovel. The last house to occupy the site was of 17th century build, inhabited until 1935 after which, it fell into ruin. Behind the moated area to the left can be seen the 17th century tithe barn.

Dist:0.9km northwest<br/>The present pier was opened in 1957 replacing an older wooden structure, and allowed large cargo ships to berth at Erith. The pier was acquired by Morrison's in 1999 and extensively refurbished as part of their nearby supermarket development. The pier began life as a straightforward structure sticking out into the river, but between about 1895 and 1910 it acquired a second arm to the west enabling the pier railway to loop back to the land. At that time there were extensive railway sidings serving the wharves where the Morrison's supermarket is now. This configuration lasted until at least the Second World War. Today the second arm has been demolished and the modern pier now has an inverted L-shape. At the very end of the pier can be seen the distant landmark of the Littlebrook power station chimney.

Dist:0.9km northwest<br/>For some reason I get a feeling of "Monsieur Hulot's Holiday" about this one; perhaps it's the flags fluttering in the breeze and the rattling of the lanyards! Anyway this is the entrance to Erith Pier from just inside the Morrison's supermarket car park, between the former Chalk Farm Wharf to the left and Garden Wharf to the right. Morrison's themselves were instrumental in refurbishing the pier although it may have been a condition attached to their being allowed to develop the site for the supermarket. The hill in the distance is actually on the Essex side of the River Thames near Coldharbour.

Dist:1.0km south<br/>Convenience shops and Slade Green's Post Office can be found here. Londis, the occupiers of the nearest unit, were originally formed in 1959 as a group of independent grocers wishing to share the economies of scale enjoyed by the larger supermarkets in having common marketing and logistics, and, much more recently, IT back-up. In 2004 Londis was taken over by the Irish Musgrave Group but still consists of over 2,100 independently owned grocery businesses in the UK.
