'Sins of the Father' by Harry Riley
Hello, I found this great website for people with a local interest. I used to live in Norham and although I now live in Nottingham I have just released a mystery novel called 'Sins of the Father'
(the haunted life of Doctor James Parker) based in a village in Northumberland I have called Norbridge (possibly Norham) I have changed the name slightly and have added one or two fictional features to aid the storyline. The tale starts just after the end of the second World War and spans two decades up to the mid 1960's...to a Britain which still advocates the death penalty for wilfull murder. It concerns the lives of two young men. Billy Turpin, an orphan who becomes a successful businessman and James Parker who becomes the village doctor. I have chosen the beautiful Coldstream Bridge for the cover of the book, rather than Norham bridge in order to preserve the fictional illusion. There is a ghostly suggestion running through the story and someone told me he thought Wilkie Collins fans would probably love it as it has similarities to 'The Woman in White.' I had not read that story but have since heard an audio tape of the story and am amazed at the similarities. I too have used the device of important letters and have put James Parker into many life threatening situations. I have an 'enchanted churchyard' on the banks of the River Tweed and a white angel.
James Parker is very naive and not really cast in the heroic mould. They say every story needs a hero but if there is a hero to my story then it has to be the awesome historical countryside of Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.
This paperback is available from today by the publisher: Pneuma Springs' or from Amazon, Waterstones, W. H. Smith online and all good bookshops. RRP: £9.99.
