William Smith, known as the Father of British Geology, was born at Churchill in Oxfordshire on March 23rd 1769. His story was told in the recent book by Simon Winchester "The Map That Changed The World". The memorial was erected in the village of his birth by the Earl of Ducie in 1891, using stones found in nearby Sarsgrove Wood.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Replacing and earlier church lower down the hill, the parish church of All Saints was consecrated in 1827. It imitates the tower of Magdalen College, Oxford, its hammerbeam roof is a copy of the roof of Christ Church, Oxford, its buttresses are versions of those of the chapel of New College, Oxford, and its windows are based on those from various Oxford Colleges. The church is seen across the village green.
