Abbey Square was laid out by the Cathedral authorities in the middle of the 18th century on the site of the old Abbey brewery and bakehouse.

Site of the former Northgate Brewery demolished in 1970 behind the former Fire Station. When the site was excavated after the demolition of the brewery buildings, evidence of Roman ramparts and barrack blocks was found. The front elevation of the houses on the right is in Water Tower Road.
