Dist:0.5km<br/>The waste tip at the former Chatterley Whitfield colliery is now part of an open space. There is a fine view over the former colliery, which retains a more complete set of buildings than any other former colliery site in the UK. The expected treatment of any objects set up in this area is reflected in the sturdy design of the bench.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Chatterley Whitfield is unique as it features the best surviving collection of historic pithead buildings and structures in England. As a result of this, the site was designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument by English Heritage in 1993. In August 2005 the National regeneration agency English Partnerships announced £14m funding, through the National Coalfields Programme, to transform some 50 ha of spoil heaps on the former Chatterley Whitfield colliery site, into picturesque parkland. Dist:0.7km<br/>I believe this was the shaft that was used for the original underground "experience". This was the "real McCoy" and I did it once c1979. The real underground was lost when a nearby pit closed and they lost the pumping. A new "underground" was built more or less at ground level but was well done.

The boiler house lost its roof and the boilers were on the point of being removed for their scrap value when English Heritage prevented their removal because of their significance as the largest set of surviving Lancashire type boilers.

Dist:0.8km<br/>Built 1903 by John Warner of Hanley and used at Silverdale until about 1980, removed 1985/6. You can see it has been re-erected but still lacks guarding. I think this may have never been opened to the public. The late George Cooper did some arm-twisting to get three of us in here.

Dist:0.8km<br/>Well it was then. You can see the site is quite clean and tidy and looks maintained then. The 1883 engine house nearest the camera contained a geared steam winch that had come from Silverdale Colliery and had been re-erected. This may well still be in the house and I think it had probably been seen by very few people (until now). The site subsequently closed and it is on SAVE's threatened list.

Dist:0.8km<br/>I'd forgotten I had this! Look in the middle foreground at the concrete walls and steel arches. This is the new underground experience being constructed. This replaced the real trip down a mine shaft. The new experience wasn't too bad but no substitute for the real McCoy. If you want to go down a coal mine you can choose between Big pit in Wales and Caphouse near Wakefield.
