Dist:0.3km<br/>These two red objects used to be outside the village shop – they have not been moved; the shop was demolished and replaced by dwellings a few years ago. The village post office, after a period of closure, was in the parish hall in the centre of the village from 1994 to 2008. The old shop, here, may well have been the previous location of the post office. The postbox is emptied at 11:30am, Monday to Saturday.

Dist:0.5km<br/>This halt, on the former Somerset & Dorset line, opened on 5th July 1928 and closed from 17th September 1956. The remarkably well-preserved platforms are made out of pre-cast concrete. It's difficult to believe that express trains once belted through here at 70mph, bound for northern cities like Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield. When I took the picture, I didn't realise it was almost 53 years to the day that the halt saw its last passengers.

Dist:0.7km<br/>There is a large double faced sundial on the church porch. Sundials or sun clocks are considered to be the oldest known device for the measurement of time and one of the most ancient scientific instruments. The oldest known true sundial was built around 1500BC in Egypt. Shaped like a letter 'L' the length of the shadow cast by the vertical leg along the horizontal leg indicated the time. The Romans perfected the horizontal sundial we know today and invented portable travelling versions.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Behind the well visited church is this superb ford over the River Stour. It's actually on a bridleway, so good to cross on horseback, but at nearly a foot high of water it would be something of a paddle for walkers.

Dist:0.7km<br/>In sheltered places in south-west England the snowdrop begins to flower at Christmas, and in other parts it is welcomed as one of the first signs of spring, flowering from January to March. The drooping, bell-shaped flowers have six segments - three white ones outside the flower and three tipped with a bright spot inside it. It is doubtful whether the snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) is a native of Britain. It was probably introduced in medieval times from central Europe and it is rare in Ireland.
