Dist:0.7km south<br/>Chapel Haddlesey village is seen in the background. In the 1970s when this photograph was taken, Haddlesey Weir was notable for the large amount of detergent foam that would accumulate below it. The Lower Aire is not navigable now, but most of its extremely sinuous course can be enjoyed by walking along the Trans-Pennine Trail between East Haddlesey and Snaith.

Dist:0.7km south<br/>The lower Aire between Haddlesey and the junction with the Ouse at Airmyn was once navigable as part of the through route from Hull and Goole to Leeds. The section was always difficult, with many bends and shoals, so it was not surprising that, with the opening of the Aire and Calder Canal, and especially the Selby Canal from Haddlesey to the Ouse at Selby, that the lower Aire fell into disuse, and with it this lock at Chapel Haddlesey. Although the lock was used for some time by maintenance boats to access the back of Haddlesey Weir, it eventually fell into ruin as is seen in this 1974 photograph. I understand that the remains of the lock have now been removed. Note that this lock should not be confused with Haddlesey Flood Lock on the Selby Canal, about a mile to the west.

Dist:1.4km west<br/>The 5.5 mile long Selby Canal was opened in 1778 between Selby on the tidal Ouse, and Haddlesey on the Aire. It greatly improved communication with Leeds as, by its use, the lower Aire between Haddlesey and Snaith, which was very difficult, being both shallow and sinuous, could be avoided. The town of Selby became very prosperous and the new canal very busy. But all this evaporated in 1826 with the opening of the Knottingley and Goole Canal, a longer and deeper cut off which avoided even more of the Aire. Selby's trade was lost to Goole, which was near enough to the sea for packet boats to operate to Belgium and Holland. Nowadays the Selby Canal is just a quiet rural waterway well suited to pleasure boating.

Dist:1.4km west<br/>This lock is at the extreme southern end of the Selby Canal at its junction with the River Aire. It is used to ensure that the water level on the canal can be controlled and is not raised or lowered unduly by fluctuations on the river. The lock should not be confused with Haddlesey Old Lock (see [[214913]]) on the River Aire, which is about 1 km to the east.

Dist:1.4km east<br/>The named drainage channel along the hedgerow leads the eye to the overhead electrical gantry of the Doncaster to York railway line at the end of this field. Freight trains use this line it seems as three passed along in the space of 15 minutes.

Dist:1.5km west<br/>Haddlesey Flood Lock, leading from the River Aire into the Selby Canal. The unusually high gates are designed to protect the low lying land in times of flood on the River Aire.
