Dist:0.3km<br/>Chalkwell Oaze is the name given on maps to this part of the Thames estuary at Southend. It can be approached at low tide along the pebbly causeway seen here. The word 'oaze' apparently indicates the tidal limit of a river.

The line between the Crowstone (or Crow Stone) and the [[326111]] marked the end of the City of London's authority over the River Thames. It is an important landmark on this section of coast and can be walked out to when the tide is out. The corresponding upstream marker is the [[326070]].

Dist:0.8km<br/>The two roads running to the esplanade are Crowstone Avenue curving at the left, and Chalkwell Avenue to the right. Just offshore from Chalkwell Avenue is the tall obelisk-like Crow Stone (or Crowstone) [[316113]]. Beyond this, the line of a hard is just visible. This gives a harder substrate for bringing boats to the shore. The previous (eastern) photo in this sequence is [[1707526]]. The next (western) photo is [[1707560]].
