Dist:0.2km<br/>The River Swale at Catterick Bridge with a little bit of extra water in it. Swale Bridge was built in 1915, as part of the Catterick Camp Military Railway, initially carrying a 2ft gauge construction line from the Richmond branch westwards to Cattrick Camp. It was converted to standard gauge in 1916, and was run by the military until 1923 when it was handed over to he LNER. Passenger services to the Camp ended on 26th Oct 1964, freight continued for another 5 years. But by Oct 1970 the branch had been dismantled, and has left little trace of its existence except for the girder bridge over the Swale. Dist:0.3km<br/>Heavy rainfall had brought the River Swale up from low summer levels to the point where the playwave would have been worth visiting in a kayak. The river left (nearer) arch has a friendly wave with excellent eddy service, but some pig wire fencing on the bank side to watch out for. The majority of the flow goes under the centre arch, which has a wide and (at this level) fairly meaty wave with excellent entertainment potential. At the level shown, only a tiny flow goes under the right (far) arch. The bridge carries the A6136, which has very limited parking (double yellow lines) owing to the chaos caused by parked cars on race days at Catterick racecourse, just the far side of the bridge. Some of the racecourse parking appears to be available when there is no event, giving access river right above the bridge. Exit river left to where the photographer was standing and go through a small wicket gate onto the road.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The A1 Catterick Bypass crosses the River Swale via this bridge near Catterick Racecourse; the Coast-to-Coast walk goes under the road alongside the river thus avoiding the dangerous crossing. The bridge's name reflects the fact that it (along with much of the adjacent racecourse) is on the site of the Roman town of Cataractonium - significant excavations took place when the road was built in 1958-9.
