The junction with Belle Vue Street is just past the red car. The house on the left was called Garfield House in 1907, and the houses beyond also existed at that date. On the right the tall fence protects the grounds of a school. See photo of Healey Lane in SE2324 for more information on Healey.

This is one of the streets running north from Healey Lane towards the top of a hill, hence the name, though unfortunately the view is blocked by the buildings. The scene was a little disappointing, not least because of the parked vans, but I photographed it because of the nice house on the right, with its well-proportioned front and the curious outbuilding (now a garage) with a monopitch roof and a chimney. There is another nice Victorian house at the top, called Spy Field House on the 1907 map.

Originally built as a secondary school; this building is now home to Leeside Primary School, Whitelee Playgroup, and Bridge Kids After-School Club.

Dist:1.0km north<br/>This was a branch line from Dewsbury up the valley to Birstall. In the foreground is the overgrown track bed, and then there is a length that has been landscaped. With luck this could be a cycle route which would extend the existing route on the disused railway past Wilton Park, Batley.

Dist:1.0km west<br/>This former toll house was built c.1840 by the Heckmondwike and Tong Turnpike Trust. It was derelict for many years, then was extended at the rear and converted to a house. The canted bay front with its central doorway was designed to give a good view of the road in each direction. Beyond is 20C ribbon development.

Dist:1.0km south<br/>The building on the right was the Sunday School when it was built in 1856; it has an inscription in the pediment: 'Independent Day and Sabbath Schools. Anno Domini 1856'. It is now the chapel (United Reform Church) and the newer building next door has been converted into flats. This was built in 1890 and is quite an amazing building, with a Classical front which the CofE of the time would perhaps have considered pagan architecture, and an exuberant tower (Italianate?) on each side.

Dist:1.0km south<br/>This fine old house is easy to miss when travelling on the A638 (High Street), as it has no windows on that side and instead faces a 20C estate road, Hill Top Estate. It was built in the early 18C, but still has the four to six light mullioned windows typical of the 17C. Note the cross on the top of the gable. The wall in front is quite new, built since it was photographed for the imagesof england.org.uk site in August 2004. The Upper Independent Chapel can be glimpsed in the background.

Dist:1.0km south<br/>The roof is going and it can't be long before this factory building is demolished. It was built after 1907 next to the Highfield Woollen Mill. Alongside Dewsbury Gate Road is a recreation ground with mini-goal posts.

Dist:1.0km east<br/>Healey was a hamlet separate from Batley, and started to grow in the 19C when there were two textile mills. The George Inn is the focal point, at the junction of Healey lane and Deighton Lane. The 19C houses ranged from small back-to-backs to the large houses of mill-managers and professional. At the western end streets were developed up the slope to the north of Healey lane, and a Methodist Chapel was built at the end of one of these (Healey Street).

Dist:1.0km east<br/>This road had recently been set out in 1907, and was still just a residential road c.1945, but later in the 20C it was extended so that the B6123 from Batley to Heckmondwike could bypass the narrow Healey Lane. The terrace of houses on the left look 19C, but were built after 1907.

Dist:1.0km west<br/>The leaf-strewn tarmac path is the remains of the trackbed of "Leeds New Line" opened Oct. 1st. 1900 by L.N.W.R., closed 1986. Here it leads under the A62 heading for what was once Hargeaves oil depot. Now revitalised as part of the Spen Valley Greenway it forms a section of Sustrans Route 66 (Gomersal spur).

Dist:1.0km west<br/>Here the A62 meets other urban routes, close to the site of a series of tenterfields-where once woven woollen cloth was pegged out to dry during manufacture.
