Dist:0.2km<br/>This house was built in the earlier part of the 19th century - around 1830 - possibly around an earlier core. It is made of ashlar below a dark Welsh slate roof in a revivalist Tudor style. This style is noted in other buildings of the estate village of Capheaton. However, this was not strictly applied - even at this building. A window is divided by Gothick style tracery mullions. Dist:0.3km<br/>These buildings used to be a former school and an attached cottage; they are now two cottages of 18th and 19th century construction. The older portion is single-storey and can be seen to the right from the road; the younger is to the left. The village of Capheaton was mainly an estate village of the Swinburne family; it is likely that there is some involvement with the family responsible for these two buildings. The construction materials will have probably been local, if not from the nearby Capheaton Hall estate. The village of Capheaton was a planned village and this building would have probably been erected at the expense of the Swinburne family of landowners.
