Dist:0.2km north<br/>This is the guardhouse to RAF Canewdon in Gardner’s Lane it is now a private property called “Rosewood”. The site was part of the chain home radar system from WW2 that was used for many years after. However this site closed not long after the end of the war. The aerial masts were sited to the north. One of the masts was bought by Marconi and still exists. See [[TL7203]] A second mast was also reused somewhere on the Welsh coast although in cut down form. Dist:0.3km north<br/>[[903981]] Gardiners Lane Pillbox in Canewdon features a rare mount for what I believe was a Vickers pompom AA gun. See the other shot for more information and another view. There are many pillboxes around here, built to guard the former radar site on the same road. Unfortunately someone has put a tyre over the AA turret. A friend of mine tried to pull it off, but it is stuck fast. This pillbox is very rare.

Dist:0.3km north<br/>Unusual type of pillbox situated at Gardiners Lane, Canewdon, with a Vickers quick-firing anti-aircraft gun emplacement on top. It would have formed part of the defences around Canewdon radar station during the war. This type of pillbox is extremely rare.

Dist:0.6km west<br/>This is Butts Hill Pond an Essex Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve http://www.essexwt.org.uk/. Technically this is a closed reserve and is not open to the public because one has to trespass for a few yards along a private road to get to it. Dist:0.8km west<br/>Canewdon church has had a reputation for many years for being probably one of the most haunted sites in Essex. there are a lot of stories that revolve around the village in general. But as far as the church is concerned the most haunted locations seem to be the church porch, the grave yard and the west gate car park area. The car park shown in the above photo seems to be particularly active. Strange things have been reported there at day and night! Next to the church is the rectory and it is said that on a moonless nights a ghost (gray lady) can sometimes be seen at the end of the driveway to the rectory! The 14th Century Church, with its 15th Century Tower and Porch, stands on a hill, 128 feet above the marshes. The oldest part of the Church is the outside wall of the North Aisle which contains many Roman bricks, presumably from an earlier building. There was much superstition around the village, believed to be a centre of witchcraft. Legend has it that while the church tower stands, there will always remain six witches in Canewdon. Local folklore also has it that if you walk around it seven times on Halloween you will see a witch, and 13 times you will become invisible. Both these stories have made the village a popular destination on Halloween, to such an extent that the police often seal off the village to non-residents on Halloween!.
