Dist:0.5km<br/>Known also as Cameron House or Cameron Bridge House this house was built in 1849 by the Haig family, owners of nearby Cameron Bridge Distillery. It was the home of Field Marshal Earl Haig, who was born in 1861. The moulded panel above the front door is dated 1911 and worded 'INFECTIOUS DISEASES HOSPITAL'. When the first four wards of Cameron Hospital were built, Haig house was retained as administrative premises but replaced in 1940 by a new administration building and is now used as nurses' accommodation.

Dist:0.6km<br/>The Wemyss family had large estates in Fife and exploited the coal under their properties, several collieries (e.g., Randolph, Frances, Michael) being named after members of the family. In the 1890s Randolph Erskine Wemyss commenced to build a private railway system to link some of his collieries to Methil Docks without having to use the tracks of the North British Railway. When the Wemyss collieries were nationalised in 1947 the Wemyss Private Railway remained in private hands but continues to serve the collieries until 1970. Much of the railway and its branches have been reclaimed by agriculture, as here east of the B930 road north of Buckhaven, but a surviving relic is a massive gatepost of the former level crossing. The hill in the distance is Largo Law.

Dist:0.6km<br/>A winter's day with springtime vegetation yet to sprout enables the disused track layout at the former Cameron Bridge station to be more clearly seen. The left-hand track used to pass into the distillery through a gate but, following a trial a few years ago, huge lorries are deemed a cheaper option for bringing in the grain and bottles for the distilled spirit than re-organising the rail-loading facilities. The railway to Cameron Bridge has now been severed from the outside world near Thornton Junction.

Dist:0.7km<br/>View westward, towards Thornton Junction: ex-NBR Thornton Junction - Leven - St Andrews line, also the branch to Methil. The Distillery is seen behind. Passenger services from Thornton Junction to Methil ceased from 10/1/65: Cameron Bridge station and the coast line to Leven, Anstruther and St Andrews was closed completely from 6/10/69. However, in 1988 the line through here was still in use to Methil, for grain traffic and coal to Methil Power Station, until about 1991.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Cameron Bridge station, on a branch that ran from Thornton Junction to Leven and then round the East Neuk of Fife to St Andrews, was closed to passengers in October 1969. Freight trains to Methil Power station continued to run past the station until the 1990s but since then, except for a trial train run a few years ago in the hope of a distillery traffic contract, the line has been unused. The right-hand platform was the passenger platform and the shorter one to the left was used for loading and unloading goods traffic. This photograph was taken from Station Road bridge. A previous Geograph photo, showing an enthusiasts' train at the platform, was taken from a footbridge at the far end of the station, which carried a public right of way that has been swallowed up by expansion of the distillery since 1984.
