As can be guessed from the puddles on the runway, the event was a bit of a wash-out, and only a couple of aircraft turned up. Cue to retire to the excellent museum cafe for a bit of coffee and cake...

Dist:0.3km north<br/>This building is Mercedes Benz's showpiece in the UK, containing a showroom, museum, and other activities, along with "driving experiences" on the old Brooklands airfield site - for example the wet area in the foreground is a skidpan (usually water, but on this frosty December morning it could just have easily been ice!)

Dist:0.4km north<br/>The aircraft on the ground is the Sultan of Oman's private VC10, preserved at Brooklands Museum. The main museum is just behind the outer engine, and modern office buildings can be seen on the airfield perimeter beyond. This was taken from a Vickers Viscount during a flight in 1996 to commemorate the type's retirement from commercial service. Many Viscounts were built at Brooklands.

Dist:0.5km north<br/>This is the 40% scale model Concorde (G-CONC) that stood from 1990 - 2007 at the end of the spur into Heathrow Airport, as an advertisement for British Airways. It was moved in 2007 to the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge - BAC at Brooklands was where much of the design and manufacture of Concorde took place. (See http://www.concordeproject.com/gconc.htm for a description of the move). The small huts in the background are the Pratts Petrol Pagoda, built in 1922 along with ones for BP and Shell, to supply fuel for racing drivers on the Brookwood motor circuit. The modern offices behind and to the right are part of "The Heights" Business Park.

Dist:0.6km north<br/>This memorial is to the period of operation of the Brooklands motor circuit. It was originally situated on the other side of the River Wey (the banks of which can be seen immediately behind it), having been unveiled in 1957, by Lord Brabazon of Tara, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the building of the circuit. In 2004, it was moved to its present position in the grounds of the Brooklands Museum and restored (in time for the circuits centenary in 2007). The reason for its move is that its original site is now part of "Mercedes-Benz World", one of the compounds of which can be seen in the background of the picture.

Dist:0.6km east<br/>This is the clubhouse from where the wealthy and influential would watch motor car racing in the 1920's at Brooklands. Brooklands was developed in 1907 by Hugh Locke King, a wealthy landowner.

Dist:0.6km east<br/>On this site the first motor racing circuit with steep banked bends was built in 1907. It also became the site for the development of the Wellington Bomber during WWII. It is also associated with motorbike racing and cycling. Other, more modern planes were developed here too such as the VC10 and a lot of work for the Concorde was done here.

Dist:0.7km north<br/>In 1911 the World's first flight ticket office was built at Brooklands in Weybridge, Surrey. This consisted of a simple brick built hut operated by Keith Prowes Ltd up to World War One. Here passengers flights in biplanes around Brooklands cost about a pound. The hut is now an exhibit in Brooklands Museum

Dist:0.7km east<br/>Concorde G-BBDG ("Delta Golf") was the first British production Concorde, and although never used in airline service, was the first aircraft ever to carry more than 100 people at more than twice the speed of sound. Dist:0.8km east<br/>These buildings are awaiting restoration - the notice is a more polite version of "Trepassers will be prosecuted". The concrete structure in the background is the remains of an anti-aircraft gun tower built to protect the aircraft factories on the site from air attack in the second world war.
