Burrowbridge Homepage


A small community on the Somerset Levels, immediately west of Burrow Mump http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/196618 from the summit of which this photo was taken. The River Parrett flows through the village and is joined to the south by the River Tone. The church was built in 1838 after attempts to rebuild the chapel atop the mump failed through lack of funds.

Dist:0.2km<br/>At Burrow Bridge. 1869 Eastons Amos & Anderson vertical duplex engine driving a vertical axis Appold Centrifugal pump. The property has been sold off but the engine is being retained in situ. This is little known outside the small cadre of stationary steam engine enthusiasts.

Dist:0.3km<br/>It is hard to believe that this building is home to an in situ land drainage steam engine of 1869 and a more recent Lancashire boiler. The discharge channel was on this side and has completely gone, likewise the chimney. Burrow Mump is in the background. This completes the set of exterior views of steam land drainage stations (with steam engines).

Dist:0.4km<br/>The Chapel of St Michael on Burrow Mump was dependent on Athelney Abbey. The chapel survived the dissolution of 1539, but was partly destroyed in 1645 when held by Royalist troops after the battle of Langport. For the memorial plaque on the tower see [[2834284]].
