Dist:0.4km north<br/>Square SK3688 is famous as the square in which Harry Brearley discovered stainless steel - something that's commonplace worldwide now. Harry was working in the research laboratory in this square when he noticed the non-corrosive properties of one of the samples. The plaque tells the story.

Dist:0.5km south<br/>The Sheffield and Tinsley Canal was opened in 1814 to allow boats to reach the centre of Sheffield from the highest navigable point on the River Don at Tinsley. This boatyard, where new narrowboats appeared to be under construction, is close to the end of the canal at Sheffield Basin. The gas works behind are on the opposite side of Sussex Street.

Dist:0.6km north<br/>The opposite view of [[846233]]. In the 1970s when I would go for school dinners in the building seen in the above link, there stood on this site a large Victorian Gothic church. As with all the building of that age in Sheffield at that time it was black from years of domestic and industrial air pollution.

Dist:0.6km south<br/>"Pom-Pom" 64433 and EM1 26001 stand on Britain's first all-electric main line. The station is now closed, but a single line is open to Deepcar, so strictly speaking it's not disused. I thought the year was 1952, but now I think it was 1954, so that's what I've put. That would make me 12 years-of-age and a bit short in stature ...for a while at least. Someone in the know may be able to tell the year from the front of the loco. Taken with a Box Brownie.
