Dist:0.4km<br/>GWR King class King Edward I tackles the UK's steepest main line gradient on a dull, late afternoon in February. The locomotive was making relatively light work of this fearsome gradient. Hard to believe there was a field full of people here. This is the gentle art of gricing whereby anybody getting in the way of the shot is shouted at until they take notice.

Dist:0.5km<br/>2007 was the Centenary of the Scout Association, this photo was taken at Pikes Pool Scout Centre near Bromsgrove. As part of the centenary celebrations over 5000 trees have been planted at the site. This photo shows the new saplings and their stakes and rabbit guards along the edge of what will be a new roadway through the site to be known as Centenary Avenue. Planted slightly later is the majority of the field to the right of the photo, this will in due course become known as Centenary Coppice and will (we hope) be named on future OS maps.

Dist:0.6km<br/>View northward, towards Blackwell and Birmingham: ex-Midland Birmingham - Bristol main line. The locomotive is one of the numerous Johnson/Deeley 5'3" 3F 0-6-0s, No. 43210, this one lasting until 8/59. As a descending Class H loose-coupled freight, this train will have stopped at Blackwell before beginning its descent, for wagon hand-brakes to be pinned down. (See also [[[2599832]]] and other Lickey Bank scenes).

At 1-in-37, few lines - let alone main lines - were burdened with a steeper incline and virtually all Up trains here had to be sent up from Bromsgrove with at least one banking engine; these were not coupled and they dropped off at the summit at Blackwell. On this comparatively light train, the 14.22 stopping train from Worcester Shrub Hill to Birmingham New Street, Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No. 45040 is managing so well with just the current Bromsgrove banker (Class 9F 2-10-0 No. 92079) that it is blowing off as it passes.

Dist:0.6km<br/>View southward, towards Bromsgrove, Worcester etc.: ex-Midland Birmingham - Bristol main line. Stanier Class 4-6-0 No. 45040 is struggling (and blowing sand for adhesion) even with about six vehicles (14.22 from Worcester Shrub Hill) and a 2-10-0 as banker. No. 45040 is nearly 30 years old but lasted until 7/67. (See [[[2060108]]] and several others).
