Dist:0.3km<br/>With a girth of more than 4.5m Pulpit Oak is probably over 400 years old. It is a marker for the ancient boundaries of Chigwell and Woodford; now the modern boundaries of Essex and Greater London. It is thought to have been a rallying point for commoners to fight against attempts by the Lords to enclose Knighton Wood in the C17 & C18. The tree is showing signs of its great age with only three stems surviving along with numerous dead branches, it is surrounded by bramble for protection.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Bancroft's was founded by the Drapers Company in 1727 and moved to its present imposing building in 1889. The arch under the red brick tower leads to the quadrangle and chapel.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Not being a local I am a little mystified by this tower in Palmerston Road. It was certainly built as part of the Congregational Church in 1873, designed by the architect Edmond Egan. There is a photo dated 1923 in the Francis Frith collection http://www.francisfrith.com/search/england/essex/buckhurst hill/photos/buckhurst hill_73931.htm of the tower with the church behind, but searching via Google fails to reveal why the body of the church was subsequently demolished. Was it damaged by a bomb, was the building unsound, or were the maintenance costs too high? Today some 1980s flats have replaced the church and somewhat incongruously abut the tower on its eastern side, while the view of the four slender corner turrets is totally ruined by the festooned mobile phone masts...

Dist:0.6km<br/>This ancient trackway forms the boundary between Knighton Wood (to the south) and Lord's Bushes (to the north). In the past this was the old Anglo-Saxon boundary between the Manors of Chigwell and Woodford. Today it is the boundary between Essex and Greater London. See also [[[2699888]]]
