![Dist:0.4km<br/>The Lion Fountain was designed by George Kennedy in 1851. His original statue at the top was of a river god, but this was replaced in 1978 by the nude figure sculpted by David Wynne.

![Dist:0.4km<br/>Bowood is a Grade I listed Georgian house and the home of the Marquess of Lansdowne. The 'Big House', which stood just off to the right, was demolished in 1955 for economic reasons (see picture at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowood_House ). What remains is still an impressive set of buildings, including this orangery by Robert Adam. This side of the building is open to the public and contains a large collection of paintings and sculptures. One of the rooms was the laboratory where Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774.

![Dist:0.4km<br/>The formal terraced gardens at Bowood cover almost every period of English garden design from early Georgian onwards. The top terrace on the left was completed in 1818 by Robert Smirke for the 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne, who wanted a setting which reminded him of his time in Italy. The lower terrace was added in 1851 by George Kennedy. The terraces were originally planted with annuals in intricate designs but today they have a more simple flower bed and tree design.

![Dist:0.4km<br/>Looking south with The Little House on the right and Clarke's Hill on the Bowood estate in the distance. At the far end of this lawn once stood The Big House, the main house built by the 1st Earl of Shelbourne. The house was left empty after the Second World War and fell into disrepair. By 1955 it had become so dilapidated that the 8th Marquess decided to demolish it and convert The Little House into a more comfortable home.
