This 20 ton erratic of andesite from Borrowdale in the Lake District, was placed in the university's main quadrangle behind Manchester Museum, on Oxford Road, after being excavated 28 feet down at the junction of "Oxford Street and Ducie Street Manchester" (according to the nearby plaque). It is not clear where this site was, because Ducie Street and Oxford Street are separated by about half a mile of city centre along a line that the Rochdale Canal roughly follows - perhaps it dug up during the canal excavations - the Rochdale Canal's main Manchester basin is by Ducie Street. My reading of the recent review of the last glaciation to affect Northwest England suggests it would probably have been deposited between 25,000 and 19,000 years ago. Dist:0.1km<br/>A sturdy block of Gothic, with a large Perpendicular Gothic window flanked by towers with pinnacles, belfries and spires. Started by Alfred Waterhouse in 1898 and completed by his son, Paul, in 1902. Alfred Waterhouse was also responsible for the mighty tower ([[[2819862]]]) and the far sections, now housing the Manchester Museum. This is the dominant group in the University of Manchester's campus. Grade II* listed. The hall, named after a prosperous local industrialist, Joseph Whitworth. is now used for major functions including graduation ceremonies. A bequest of a wealthy merchant, John Owens, led to the foundation of Owens College in 1851. These buildings were the fruits of later expansion, the college subsequently metamorphosising into the University of Manchester. Before it merged with UMIST, it was colloquially referred to as 'Owens' to distinguish it from the latter.

It has all manner of openings - the windows get thinner and pointier as one ascends - all crowned by a steep pyramidal roof and pinnacled spires. The archway leads to the quadrangle and main building behind. Grade II* listed. To the left is the Whitworth Hall ([[[2819836]]]), while the Manchester Museum lies to the right.

Dist:0.1km<br/>This will be the University of Manchester's "Alan Gilbert Learning Commons", in plain English a place where students can congregate to study or, more likely, put off studying. It is named after the re-born university's first vice-chancellor. Previously on this site stood the 1960s Moberly Tower and Refectory. The language of the website and the slogans on the hoardings bring home the extent to which universities now spew out the same vacuous marketing speak as pretty much everyone else.

Dist:0.2km<br/>A large low block of grey concrete, ribbed in the oversailing top section. By the "building's then inhabitants, Professors N.L. Hanson and R.H. Kantorowich, with M.C. Schonegevel and G. Skacel, 1970". Pevsner calls it uninspiring, but for my sins I'm a sucker for concrete. As usual one is being watched.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Swaggering slice of Edwardian Baroque. Red brick and stone with typical florid motifs such as the open pediment with cartouche and round windows framed by swags. By Charles Heathcote & Sons, 1908. Grade II listed. It has been incorporated into the Manchester Museum.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Where the University of Manchester's students can attend debates, concerts, get something to eat, but mostly drink in one of the cheap bars. It looks as if it might date from the 1950s. The projecting centre is emphasised by thin vertical fins, possibly intended to evoke a Classical portico.
