The concrete slab in the foreground is a seat, and is inscribed "One million years of pressure", presumably with reference to the formation of the coal seams. Dist:0.3km<br/>This foot crossing connects Nottingham Road and Bulwell Hall Estate (to the left) and Bestwood. The Robin Hood railway line from Nottingham to Mansfield and Worksop (right) and the NET tramway share the Midland Railway formation (originally double track), which dates from 1848 - the first of three railways built in the Leen Valley and the only one remaining. In the distant past a siding led off to the right from behind the camera to serve the mill shown in [[[2505749]]], and from 1952 the branch line to Calverton Colliery diverged to the right about a quarter of a mile to the north (ahead), just beyond where the Great Northern Leen Valley Line crossed at an angle on a girder bridge of which nothing remains.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The white house on the left was converted from the booking office of Bestwood Station, on the Great Northern Railway Leen Valley Line, which opened in 1881 and closed to passengers in 1931 and to coal traffic in 1964. The wooden platforms and shelters of the station were on the embankment now covered in trees on the left. The scene I remember from childhood is shown in Ben Brooksbank's [[[1793677]]], taken from almost the same spot in 1963. Only the chimney stack of the converted house is recognisable from the original building. New houses and a tree obscure the railway cottages further down the road which are shown in [[[2505864]]].

Dist:0.4km<br/>The Great Northern Railway Leen Valley Line (1881-1964) crossed the road on a substantial bridge straight ahead. Its substantial brick abutments and plate girder are long gone and a new lightweight bridge carries walkers and cyclists - the line is now a traffic-free cycle route from Rise Park to Bestwood Country Park. The white house is an adaptation of the former booking office, though the chimney stack is the only recognisable feature of the original red-brick building. The station consisted of two wooden platforms on the top of the embankment, behind the trees on the right. For another view of the station, see [[[2505799]]].

Dist:0.4km<br/>One of many water-powered mills in the Leen Valley, this mill at Bestwood was built about 1783 and rebuilt after a fire in 1838. Originally a cotton mill, it was later a corn mill and subsequently a store. It was last used in the 1970s. Dist:0.4km<br/>This part of the old Great Northern Railway Leen Valley Line, between Rise Park and Bestwood Country Park, is now a walking and cycling route. The passenger station here closed in 1931 and the line to all traffic in 1964. There were wooden platforms and waiting shelters and steps down the embankment to the booking office at road level below.
