Dist:0.3km<br/>Clacton Road, Horsley Cross just north of the Wix By-pass (A120). If a foreign visitor having landed at Harwich is at this point they will have just made their first right turn after driving "straight" for 12 km. And possibly there was a serious accident here caused by someone driving on the wrong side. Of course the sign should be on the other side of the road! Essex is not always this helpful - if the foreign visitor continues along this road, they may land up in the Crown Hotel, Manningtree. There, if they go to the toilet, they will have to work out for themselves which of "Gulls" or "Buoys" is appropriate for their sex. The buildings on the right are part of the main treatment works of Tendring Hundred Water Services Ltd http://www.thws.co.uk/ .

Dist:0.7km<br/>A slice of the old route of the Harwich Road, cut off by a re-routed section, is now just an access for a few houses and, here, a dump for an old car.

Although Oaktree Manor http://www.partnershipsincare.co.uk/facilities/oaktree_manor.html has only been operating since about 2002, they could use the slogan "170 years of residential care" for this is the workhouse which opened about 1836 to serve the thirty or so parishes of the Tendring Poor Law Union.
