Dist:0.6km north<br/>One of London Colney's seven public houses along its High Street, the pub is Victorian and is shown on the Ordnance Survey maps from 1898 onwards. The smoked glass windows and the grey tablet on the side at first floor level bear witness to the pub's previous owners, Trumans. However the pub has existed on the site since 1881 at least because the Census from that year recorded the following occupants: Charles OAKLEY, Head of the Household, married, aged 60, born London Colney, Hertfordshire, occupation Gardener & Publican Eliza OAKLEY, wife, aged 37, born Wendron, Cornwall Sarah OAKLEY, daughter, unmarried, aged 25, born London Colney, Hertfordshire, General Servant William OAKLEY, son, aged 1, born London Colney, Hertfordshire Anne OAKLEY, granddaughter, aged 6 months, born London Colney, Hertfordshire

Dist:0.6km east<br/>Having photographed [[742209]] it would be unfair not to submit an image of its very close neighbour, located about 200 metres away down the High Street, but in a different grid square. Although not marked as such on the old Ordnance Survey mapping the pub has existed since at least 1881 when the Census enumerator recorded the following occupants: Robert FROST, Head of the household, married, age 56, born Necton, Norfolk, occupation Farm Foreman (Bailiff) Mary A. FROST, wife, aged 56, born Necton, Norfolk Christina FROST, daughter, unmarried, aged 26, born Necton, Norfolk, occupation Dressmaker Walter FROST, son, unmarried, aged 18, born St Albans, Hertfordshire, occupation Agricultural Labourer Agnes FROST, granddaughter, aged 7, born London Colney, Hertfordshire Charles BENNETT, boarder, widower, aged 57, born Shenley, Hertfordshire, occupation Agricultural Labourer It is interesting to see that the head of the household did not give his primary occupation as the publican. However the old maps show that Sheephouse Farm was just over the road from the pub (where the 1960s flats with the pale orange brickwork are), so maybe Robert Frost was the foreman at that farm.

Dist:0.6km east<br/>The fine seven arch bridge carrying the main road through London Colney over the River Colne, viewed looking upstream and eastwards. London Colney used to be the last stop on a coaching route from the north into London, and there are two pubs, The Bull and the Green Dragon, on either side of the river. In front of the bridge is a ford.

Dist:0.6km east<br/>In the wet winter of 1993, which followed nearly three years of drought when the river almost dried up. There is another more current image on this website taken very close to this which shows the usual size and flow of the river and also refers to flooding during 2001/02.

Dist:0.7km east<br/>The aftermath of the extraordinary snowstorm that occurred over a narrow band of the Midlands and South East England on 28 October 2008 is recorded here. It began snowing at about 6pm in London Colney continuing for several hours. The weight of the snow combined with the fact that many trees had not yet shed their leaves caused many branches to snap off. Such was the general coldness that the snow was still present in small patches two days afterwards. This is the River Colne on the morning after looking upstream towards Telford's bridge.

Dist:0.7km north<br/>This street used to be part of the old A6 trunk road from London to Carlisle, but London Colney now has a by-pass and the A6 now starts in Luton.

Dist:0.7km east<br/>Photographed on the morning after the snowstorm of 28 October 2008, the bridge carries Barnet Road over the River Colne. According to the stone plaque set into the brickwork it was originally built around 1775 and restored in 1998. Thomas Telford was born in 1757 and apprenticed to a stonemason in 1771 so this would have been one of his earliest designs. The road is an old coaching route from London to St Albans, and later became one of the main arterial routes into and out of London as the A6. With the building of the London Colney Bypass the road was completely declassified.

Dist:0.8km south<br/>The building on the right was completed in 1901 as a convent for the All Saints Sisters of the Poor, an Anglican order, to the design of Leonard Stokes. The Chapel on the left was added between 1921 and 1928 to the design of the renowned church architect, Sir Ninian Comper (1864-1960), and extended by his son Sebastian Comper between 1960 and 1964. It is therefore, unsurprisingly, known as the Comper Chapel. The whole building was acquired by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Westminster in 1973, and today caters for both residential and non-residential conferences, meetings and retreats, mainly from religious organizations. http://www.allsaintspc.org.uk/

Dist:0.8km east<br/>A fine floral display outside the pub is caught in the early morning sunshine. As befits its history as the last stagecoach stop before London there are at least seven public houses in London Colney on or very near this road, of which The Bull is one. The road, which was the old A6 and is now just plain old Barnet Road, rises up to London Colney bridge [[74472]] in the distance.
